Evaluation: Represented as one of seven with an automatic. Sold new in Minnesota. MCACN Concours Gold award in 2015. A few small blemishes behind the front bumper but mostly a gorgeous, correct, and seriously well optioned Goat.
Bottom Line: The range-topping Ram Air IV engine cost over $500 to add to your ’70 GTO and, faced with spiking insurance rates, few people sprung for both the hot powertrain and a soft top. Even fewer went for the Judge package, but rare as they might be, Ram Air IV Pontiacs have been a fairly common sight at Mecum auctions this year, as they brought a collection of them to Kissimmee and there were six in Indy, including a Firebird.
This was the most expensive one in Indy but it deserved to be given the equipment and the condition of its body-off restoration. That said, another automatic Ram Air IV ’70 GTO convertible became the most expensive (Pontiac) GTO when it sold in Kissimmee this year for $1.1M, but that result appears to be an outlier rather than a reset of the market.
