EVALUATION : Older restoration | 2014 Pebble Beach second in class (runner-up to the ex–Roberto Rossellini 375MM that was eventually best of show). Excellent paint shows minor polishing scuffs. Upholstery and soft interior trim look unused. Bright chrome. A quality older restoration, sensitively used and maintained.
BOTTOM LINE : Vignale, established in 1948, was only beginning to develop a signature style when it turned out this Ferrari. The chrome crossbar grille floating in the radiator air intake, integrated Ferrari logo, taillights recessed in chrome nacelles matched by lighted front fender chrome strakes, and glamorous tinted glass sun visors highlight the coachbuilder’s attention to detail. It is gorgeous, but its result here is more than 10 percent below what it brought nearly five years ago, when Bonhams sold it at Quail Lodge (cataloged chassis number 0159EL) for $2.2 million. Still, a reasonable result for both the seller and the buyer.
